23 Weeks

Your baby is more than 11 inches long and weighs just over a pound (about as much as a large mango). He may be able to feel your movements now, so put on some tunes and dance around the house. No matter what race your baby is, he looks red now due to blood vessels showing through his transparent skin. His true skin tone will develop over the course of his first year. Blood vessels in your baby’s lungs are developing to prepare him for breathing, but complete lung development will take many more months. The lungs are the last organ to fully develop.

It’s Finally Coming Together

So I have been nesting something fierce lately. Poor Jess, he handles it all so well. For some odd reason, I feel the need to start getting things ready. Karl and Dao are sending baby packages soon, and I know that will really help, but for the time being… I am going insane.

My Dad bought us a CRIB!!! Can you believe it? He is the best. He and my mom delivered it today at about noon. It is still in the box and I plan on keeping it that way as long as possible, but just knowing the box is in the nursery-to-be makes me feel a lot better. He also bought us a swing, it’s super cute and I promise to post pictures as soon as we have it put together. It goes right along with the Winnie the Pooh Theme.

So now we have the crib, a swing, 2 cradles, some toys, a carseat, and some baby clothes (which by the way I cleared a space for in my closet and hung up, seeing them there helps me as well). So in all this craziness Jess has kept his head on straight. He appeases me by kissing my belly and talking to the baby. It’s the little things like that that confirm he will be a GREAT dad! (and anybody who disagrees can deal with me!)

Jess and I went to regsiter at Babies R Us this weekend. It was a bit awkward as the store girl followed us around the whole time just in case we had questions. But it made it difficult to discuss things and joke the way Jess and I like to. On top of that, this morning I got on to check out the registry and see what we had registered for, and there was nothing there!!! The girl had forgotten to upload our list! Oooohhhhhh was I mad! When we finished at Toys R Us, she had to call someone to ask how to upload it, and just kind of sat there. Then told us we could leave and she would handle it. Did she honestly think we wouldn’t find out? Come on. She had our phone number, she could have called us. But to avoid ripping her face off (which, by they way, I am totally capable of right now) I just spend an hour and half registering online trying to remember all the things we requested.

The next step is WalMart, that one should hopefully go better… Hopefully. Keep your fingers crossed.

We will be cleaning up the “office” and turning it into a nursery over the next month. Pictures will eventually follow.

On a side note, Dogs+Poprocks= not as much fun as you might think. We got bored the other night and were trying to take our minds off everything thats been going on. I ran down to Walgreens, picked up some PopRocks and Jess poured a few into the dogs mouths. Their reaction? Nothing, they licked their lips a lot and shook their heads a few times. Not nearly as much fun as we had hoped for. I have a video… I guess I should upload it. But don’t bother tormenting your dogs with PopRocks. It’s not as cool as you think.

22 Weeks

Waist: 42″

Weight: 175 (yikes! I need to start keeping an eye on that!)

Your baby now looks like a miniature newborn, checking in at 10.9 inches (the length of a spaghetti squash) and almost 1 pound. Her skin will continue to appear wrinkled until she gains enough weight to fill it out. Your baby’s eyes are developed, though the iris (the colored part of the eye) still lacks some pigment. Her lips are becoming more distinct, and the first signs of teeth are appearing as buds beneath her gum line. Her eyes are developed, though the iris (the colored part of the eye) still lacks pigment. Eyelids and eyebrows are in place, and her pancreas, essential for hormone production, is developing steadily.

Your baby now weighs about three-quarters of a pound and is approximately 10 1/2 inches long the length of a carrot. If you’re having a girl, her vagina is formed now, though it will continue to develop until birth. Your baby is really on the move now. Fetal researchers say babies move about 50 times an hour even while sleeping. All that movement helps stimulate your baby’s physical and mental development. You may not notice 50 kicks, punches, and twirls during the day, but as you’re settling down at night, don’t be surprised if your little guy seems ready to dance the night away.

THE HALF-WAY MARK!

How your baby’s growing:Your baby weighs about 10 1/2 ounces now. She’s also around 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom, and about 10 inches from head to heel — the length of a banana. (For the first 20 weeks, we use measurements taken from the top of the baby’s head to her bottom — known as the “crown to rump” measurement. After that, we use measurements from head to toe. This is because a baby’s legs are curled up against her torso during the first half of pregnancy and are very hard to measure.)A greasy white substance called vernix caseosa coats her entire body to protect her skin during its long submersion in amniotic fluid. (This slick coating also eases the journey down the birth canal.)Your baby is swallowing more, which is good practice for her digestive system. She’s also producing meconium, a black, sticky substance that’s the result of cell loss, digestive secretion, and swallowed amniotic fluid. This meconium will accumulate in her bowels, and you’ll see it in her first messy diaper (although a few babies pass it in utero or during delivery).
